Im Kundenauftrag Auf dem Turiner Automobilsalon 1968 wurden zwei Prototypen für einen neuen, eleganten Maserati mit vier Sitzen vorgestellt, einer von der Carrozzerie Vignale und einer von der Carrozzerie Ghia, die beide seit langem mit Maserati verbunden waren. Der Prototyp von Vignale wurde ausgewählt und auf dem Genfer Automobilsalon 1969 als Maserati Indy Vignale Coupé vorgestellt. Wie bei einigen früheren Maserati-Modellen wurde der Name als Hommage an die große Rennsportgeschichte der Marke gewählt - in diesem Fall an die dominanten Siege des Maserati 8C TF beim 500-Meilen-Rennen von Indianapolis in den Jahren 1939-1940. Der Maserati Indy war trotz seines schlanken zweitürigen Coupé-Profils als vollwertiger viersitziger Luxus-Grand-Tourer konzipiert. Kern der Konstruktion war ein vorn eingebauter 4,2-Liter-Leichtmetall-V8-Motor, der von vier Weber-Vergasern gespeist wurde und an ein 5-Gang-ZF-Getriebe (oder 3-Gang-Automatik) gekoppelt war.
